The Royal Emirates Group of Companies, a Dubai business group headed by Sheik Butti bin Suhail Al Maktoum, bought the Spanish club Getafe. Kaiser Rafiq, a partner and managing director of the group, said the company paid between $100 million to $130 million for the team.

Sheik Butti is the latest Middle East investor to buy a European club. Abu Dhabi’s Sheik Mansour took over English Premier League team Manchester City in 2008, and a Qatar sheik purchased the Spanish club Málaga in June.

Dubai News: Fuel Supply Interrupted

Despite inside reports that Emirates General Petroleum Corporation (Emarat) had restored fuel normal supply after days of emptiness, motorists were not getting it by on Thursday evening and the problem was catching up to some other pump stations of different labels.
“I had never had this experienced in more than five years I have lived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE),” said Salim K., an expatriate who said he was lucky to have his car fuelled on the fourth station of EPPCO after trying different fuel pump stations.

The shortage of fuel crisis started with Emarat on April 19, which announced it will end on Friday, then inside reports suggested they had resumed on Thursday, but its chain of consequences spread to other pump stations such as EPPCO.

Salim narrated his Wednesday night ordeal to The Gulf Today that saw him failing to get fuel from Down town Deira until he when he got it along Al Mankhool Road in Bur Dubai.

“I had heard there was no fuel on Emarat stations and I had seen some cars queuing up along other petrol stations, but I thought I would easily get it at night. It wasn’t possible near Dafco Hotel in Naif; or near Al Baraha Hospital or at Hamriya.”

The Emarat authorities attribute the shortage to a “logistical problem” at the company’s supply depots.

For Juma Ddamulira, a Ugandan living in Deira, some petrol stations had slammed a quota of Dhs40 on his consumption. The incident happened to him on Thursday evening on a petrol station different from Emarat near the Clock Tower in Dubai.

“I wanted to buy petrol of Dhs50, but the pump attendant said I could only take of Dhs40. I moved forward to another, but he told me I could take of only Dhs30. I told him that his friend was giving me of Dhs40 and so he gave me of that amount.

“However, there was a man driving Benz who looked to be a long safari traveller who was allowed to take petrol of Dhs60.”

As Salim and Juma were hopping here and there for fuel, the Emarat establishment issued a statement to the effect that resumption of supply was to continue on Friday, only to declare early on Thursday the return to business on April 21.

One station manager was quoted on Thursday by the local online outfit, ArabianBusiness.com on condition of anonymity saying, “Today, we received 18,000 litres of fuel supply in the morning. Things are back to normal and we expect to receive a further 18,000 this afternoon. All those stations will resume operations at full capacity as of Friday morning.”

It is currently the largest shopping mall in the Middle East, although the Dubai Mall, which is under construction by Emaar, and Mall of Arabia will take the top spots upon completion in late 2008 or early 2009. In a global perspective, the World's largest shopping mall, the South China Mall in Dongguan, China, contains approximately 7.1 million square feet of shopping space in a complex that totals approximately 9.6 million square feet. Although it features the usual amenities for a mall (a fourteen-screen movie theater, a gaming arena, a typical variety of stores, and a soon-to-be-completed dramatic theater), its biggest claim to fame is the Middle East's first indoor ski slope, Ski Dubai.
With the ski area, one of the largest in the world, the Mall of the Emirates seeks to differentiate itself from the dozen or so other newly completed malls in Dubai and the surrounding emirates. Half of the mall opened in September 2005, then officially opened in late November 2005 with the inauguration of the ski area, although it had already been in operation for several weeks. Information Golf Courses in Dubai

1.Emirates Golf Club
That was the name given to the Emirates Golf Club, Dubai when it became the first all-grass championship golf course in the gulf region, way back in 1988. And so it remains to this day, even though many have followed in its footsteps. His Highness General Sheikh Mohamed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum's brainchild still inspires awe amongst all who play its verdant green golf courses, as well as those who simply visit its unique and ageless clubhouse.
The ageless design of clubhouse reflects a Bedouin tented village with seven gleaming white concrete and glass structures, complemented by the natural look of the off-course areas of the golf course, where desert flora and fauna have flourished and established themselves over the years.

The traditions of Arabia are not restricted to the design of the clubhouse. The oldest tradition of all – Arabian hospitality - is the foundation upon which the successful development and reputation of Emirates Golf Club has been built. For members and visitors alike, a welcome unmatched anywhere in the world, is guaranteed.

2. Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club
Situated in the heart of the city on the shores of the Creek, Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club is a golfers’ paradise. The club’s 18-hole, par 71 course rolls 6,857 undulating yards along well-groomed fairways lined with date and coconut palms, water hazards and shrubbery that lend a distinctly tropical air. The course boasts a new front nine, re-designed by Thomas Björn, and remodelled tees, greens and topography on the back nine, providing a challenge for residents and tourists alike.

The Creek’s Golf Academy offers a nine-hole Par 3 course in addition to a spacious driving range and putting, chipping and bunker practice greens, with all facilities floodlit until 10.00pm. The club also offers a Golf Swing Analysis Centre, Club Fitting Centre and two Pro Shops offering all the latest in golfing accessories and equipment.

3.Arabian Ranches Golf Club

Arabian Ranches Golf Club formerly known as The Desert Course, Dubai, was opened for play in February, 2004, with the Clubhouse opening in May, 2005. The 18 hole desert style course, the first of its kind in the region, with no water hazards or defined bunkers – but plenty of sand, is styled as an Ian Baker-Finch Signature Golf Course in association with Nicklaus Design.

It can be stretched to a challenging 7,691 yards par 72 layout from the Championship Tees but more typically is played at a friendlier tee of the day yardage at 6,531 yards.

4.The Montgomerie
Combining the course design traditions of truly great Scottish links courses; The Montgomerie Dubai is the new jewel of golf courses in the United Arab Emirates. Covering more than two hundred acres, this spectacular golf course provides the player with undulating "links land" style fairways which challenge and intrigue all levels of player. Placement of the drive to the generous fairways remains the cornerstone of any good round. The flat landing area of each fairway can be challenging to find, but in the end a rewarding adventure.

With fourteen lakes and eighty one bunkers, The Montgomerie Dubai, this first example of the association between golfing great Colin Montgomerie and Desmond Muirhead adds a distinctive variety to the golfing landscape of the region. One of the signature hole designs, the par three thirteenth, boasts the largest single green in the world. With a total area of 58,000 sq feet - the equivalent of nine greens - its island green can be played from a 360 degree teeing ground giving the advantage of a totally different golf hole each time you play.

5.Jebel Ali Golf Resort
The championship-standard Resort Course is both scenically stunning and a fair and exciting challenge to any level of player. Arranged on different elevations, the 9 hole par 36 course features a large central salt-water lake that comes into play on five holes. Each hole is uniquely landscaped with exotic trees, shrubs, wooden gazebos and panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf.

Peacock, guinea fowl, and partridges roam free on the perfectly manicured Bermuda grass greens and fairways. The availability of four tees on each hole not only creates a different aspect and playability for every hole, but also offers an opportunity to play an 18 hole round. Golfers wishing to maintain their tee and fairway shots have access to a 350 yard range.

Information Dubai Museum

The Dubai Museum is a must see for everyone who comes to Dubai. This is a lively interactive museum with working models and lifesize displays portraying various aspects of Dubai life: a bustling market, an Islamic school, the desert at night and sealife in the Gulf.

Established in 1970, the museum is housed in the imposing 19th century Al Fahidi fort. The Al Fahidi Fort, was built around 1799, and once guarded the landward approaches to the town. Thought to be the city’s oldest building, the fort was both the residence of Dubai’s rulers and the seat of government until it was retired as a museum in 1971. It was renovated in 1970 for use as a museum; further restoration and the addition of galleries was completed in 1995.

Colorful and evocative dioramas, complete with life-size figures and sound and lighting effects, vividly depict everyday life in pre-oil days at the museum. Galleries show scenes from the Creek, traditional Arab houses, mosques, the souk, date gardens, desert and marine life. One of the most interesting exhibits portrays the underwater world of pearl-diving, including sets of pearl merchants’ weights, scales and sieves.

The main fort is a fascinating military museum. The museum also displays a fine collection from ancient history including copper, alabaster and pottery artefacts found in graves up to 4,000 years.

In recent years, archaeologists have unearthed hundreds of artefacts, including pottery, weapons and coinage, that point to civilised settlements dating back to the third millennium B.C. These historic finds have been carefully preserved and are now permanently housed in the Archaeological section of the Museum.

The museum is open from 8:30am to 7:30pm (Sat-Thu) and Fridays from 2pm hrs to 7:30 hrs.

Dubai Information World Cup

As 11 of the world’s leading thoroughbreds stepped onto Dubai’s refurbished Nad Al-Sheba racecourse on 27 March 1996, one of racing’s most ambitious dreams came true. The brainchild of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai World Cup is a fitting tribute to his love of horses and of horseracing.

For more than two decades, horse owners and breeders from the Arab world have worked to establish the Arab presence in international thoroughbred racing, not only by winning top trophies in the United States, Great Britain, France and Japan, among others, but also by bringing world-class racing and breeding back to the Arabian Peninsula, the home of the thoroughbred’s renowned ancestor, the Arabian.

Horse racing began in the Emirate in October 1981, when the dusty Camel Track hosted the first thoroughbred. The race meeting consisted of three races - a sprint, a mile and a mile and a half. Just over a decade later in 1992, the now world-famous racing stable Godolphin began, followed by the inaugural Dubai World Cup meeting in 1996.

The initial Dubai World Cup racemeeting put the United Arab Emirates on the map, as it has become the home of one of the world’s top racing challenges, and has drawn the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe.

The standard was set and history was made by the American ‘wonder horse’ Cigar, when he claimed the first Dubai World Cup. Cigar appeared to be in trouble when from last came Soul of the Matter who began to cut into Cigar’s lead. Like all true champions, Cigar called upon extra reserves and defied his rival in the final 200m. Described as a heroic battle, this encounter indeed set the benchmark for all future renewals.

With the establishment of the annual invitation-only Dubai World Cup, the United Arab Emirates became the home of one of the world’s top racing challenges, and drew the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe. Among the horses entered in the inaugural race was a 13-time winner from Australia, a seven-race winner from Great Britain, the ‘dirt horse’ champion from Japan, and Cigar, North America’s ‘Horse of the Year’ for 1995.

Reflective of the overwhelming generosity of the UAE and embodying the warmth of traditional Arabian hospitality, contenders for the purses are flown in from all corners of the world, such as North and South America, South Africa, South East Asia, Australasia and Europe, and horsemen enjoy generous travel subsidies for their support of racing in the UAE.

To celebrate the 15th renewal of the Dubai World Cup and opening of the iconic Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse an extension of the programme was recently announced, and the Dubai World Cup meeting will now stage eight races, with the addition of the Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint, a 1200m turf race worth US$1 million.

The meeting, traditionally taking place at the end of March is now worth a staggering US$26.25 million, is not just about the world’s richest race, as the rest of the eight-race card is also stacked with quality.

The Dubai World Cup, now worth US$10 million, is classified as a ‘Group 1 Flat Race’ previously run on dirt for four-year-old thoroughbreds and above, and spans a distance of 2000m (one mile, two furlongs). 2010 marks the first year this race will be run on Tapeta.

Chief supporting races are the US$5 million Dubai Duty Free and the US$5 million Dubai Sheema Classic - the two richest races run on turf, anywhere in the world. The newest addition to the card is the Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint, worth US$1 million, to be run over 1200m on turf. Also on the card are the Dubai Golden Shaheen and UAE Derby, both worth US$2 million, and the US$1 million Godolphin Mile, while the evening kicks off with the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians.

Perhaps part of the Dubai World Cup’s success is not only due to the state-of-the-art race track, but the burgeoning status of Dubai as an international crossroads and global transport hub, and of course a first-class tourist destination, evidenced by more than 50,000 racegoers attending the Dubai World Cup meeting each year.
